Council lays on treats for youngsters
SWANSEA youngsters are going to be spoiled for choice for things to do over the Easter holidays – and all of it safely in line with the latest local lockdown restrictions.
Thanks to some easing of the restrictions, organised outdoor events for young people are now allowed.
And that’s paved the way for the return of the Parklives initiative featuring outdoor activities located at a number of parks across the city over the next two weeks.
On top of that, there are a heap of activities planned online by those council venues which currently still remain closed in line with Government restrictions.
Tracey Mcnulty, Swansea Council’s head of service for cultural services, said: “Despite the latest easing of restrictions, the Easter holidays won’t be like they have been in the past.
“The activities we are promoting are encouraging people to enjoy the holiday break, follow all the government advice and help to keep ourselves and our community safe.”
Here are seven top ideas for what to do – more information about all of them has been rounded up on the Enjoy Swansea Bay website, www. enjoyswanseabay.com
■ Doorstep detectives: win a prize in a free-toenter competition that encourages youngsters to explore Swansea’s nooks and corners without the need to leave your home.
Prizes include an iphone SE 2020 (courtesy of PBS Telecom PBS Telematics), an outdoor explorers kit (courtesy of Amazon) and some Easter lego from Smyths Toys Superstore. ■ Dylan Thomas Centre: Join in with activities themed on Dylan Thomas’s poem ‘Here in this spring’. Create decorated writing paper and envelopes for your own letters or poems, make a visual poem from objects in your home or outdoors, and have fun with our wordsearch and acrostic poem template. ■ Swansea Libraries: Swansea Libraries have a great line-up of activities over the Easter holidays.
Join Pontarddulais Library online for Rhymetime, storytime and a very special bouncing bunnies craft.
Clydach Library will be spreading the joys of spring with an actionpacked week of activities to get you outside with a bookish twist.
There’ll be lots of usual content, including book reviews and the brand new blog, which launched in March featuring the popular Treasures of Swansea Libraries”
Swansea Libraries will be offering its popular click and collect service throughout the Easter holidaysc too. All libraries will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. ■ Glynn Vivian: With two new free live workshops for families and a whole bunch of fun and creative activities to try at home, the team has created plenty of ideas to keep your budding little artists busy during the holidays.
Today from 11am, the gallery’s associate artist Mary Hayman and local printmaker and designer Nylah Mak will be on hand to guide you through creating your own multimedia artwork using potato printmaking and painting techniques in the Creative Children’s Workshop. ■ Make Your Own Museum: Do you have a collection or a story to tell?
You could make your own museum in a box or display your objects on a table or other suitable place. Choose your theme and see if you can link the objects together in an interesting way.
Perhaps you have always collected things just because it is fun.
Think about how you could display them in your own museum and think about what you might like to say about the objects to tell their story. Remember to give your exhibition a name. ■ Parklives: There’s a full timetable of sports on offer at a number of parks over the Easter break.
The council’s sport and health team is also staging a range of online activities you can do from home via Zoom, including zumba, family circuits and lowimpact circuits. All sessions – indoors or outdoors – have to be booked in advance. ■ Activity Sheets: Whether you’re staying at home, staying local or venturing a little further afield over the Easter holidays, the team at Enjoy Swansea Bay has some fun activity sheets to keep little ones entertained whilst waiting for the Easter bunny.
