Person killed after being hit by train

A PERSON has died after being hit by a train on the South Wales mainline near Port Talbot.

British Transport Police said officers received reports of a casualty on the tracks near Taibach, Port Talbot, shortly before 12.20pm yeserday. A spokesman said paramedics attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

Network Rail said the train involved later resumed its service but passengers were warned to expect knock-on delays for a short time.

Western Rail website disruption was expected between Cardiff Central and Swansea until 5.30pm yesterday.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to the line in Taibach shortly before 12.20pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A Network Rail spokesman said: “A person has been hit by a train near Port Talbot with emergency services attending the scene.

“The line has now reopened but there is likely to be knock-on delays for a short period. Passengers are advised to check before they travel.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called on Wednesday, March 31, at approximat­ely 12.22pm to reports of a person needing urgent medical care in central Port Talbot.

“We responded with one rapid response vehicle, one emergency ambulance, and two vehicles of our hazardous area response team.”
