Root goes cheaply as Glam take control at Headingley

-

JOE Root was dismissed for an unconvincing 59-ball 16 as one of 16 wickets to fall during an exhilarating second day between Yorkshire and Glamorgan at Emerald Headingley, with the visitors just maintaining the advantage.

This opening round LV= Insurance County Championship fixture was firmly in Glamorgan’s hands having posted 330 in their first innings during the opening half hour of play before bowling their hosts out for 193.

Yorkshire narrowly avoided the follow-on yet conceded a 137 lead at tea.

But Ben Coad, who claimed four for 94 in the first innings, then struck three times with the new ball under overcast skies to reduce the Welshman to 29 for four second time around. Glamorgan later closed on 68 for four from 29 overs, a lead of 205.

Billy Root and Chris Cooke will begin day three on 25 and 17 respectively.

Test captain Root miscued a full toss from 22-year-old off-spinner Callum Taylor to mid-off shortly after lunch. Before lunch, he survived a huge lbw appeal on four whilst sweeping at younger brother Billy’s part-time spin.

He also offered a sharp return catch on 12 to Taylor shortly before his dismissal, which left Yorkshire 79 for four.

An unbeaten 38 from Dom Bess was key in helping the hosts reach the follow-on target of 181 just before tea after the score had slipped to 175 for nine.

Taylor was joined in taking two wickets by seam trio Michael Hogan, Dan Douthwaite and David Lloyd.

Australian Hogan, aged 39, was a central figure in the morning session - with bat and ball.

He moved from 40 overnight to 52 with three boundaries in the day’s first over from Coad as Glamorgan advanced from 310 for eight.

Coad claimed one of the two morning Glamorgan wickets, while unbeaten Timm van der Gugten advanced from 80 to 85, adding to Hogan’s 54.

Hogan then reduced Yorkshire’s reply to 31 for two by getting Tom Kohler-cadmore caught behind and Tom Loten bowled.

Yorkshire lost their last eight wickets during the afternoon.

Adam Lyth was the first for an innings-high 52, followed by Root and Harry Brook for 40. Root was only Taylor’s third first-class wicket.

At tea, Glamorgan’s victory hopes would have been sky high.

But Coad’s post tea burst of three for 18 from six overs will have eroded that belief somewhat.

He removed Nick Selman and Kiran Carlson caught behind and David Lloyd caught at third slip.
