Welsh great is still the daddy of them all...

- ROBERT LLOYD

SIR Anthony Hopkins has celebrated his Bafta win in Wales.

And he has confirmed he has had his Covid-19 vaccination.

The Silence Of The Lambs star, 83, who is from Port Talbot, won the best actor prize for The Father, directed by Florian Zeller, about a man slipping into dementia.

The actor usually lives in Los Angeles but is on holiday in his native Wales.

He did not appear virtually at the ceremony to accept the gong, but did speak to the media afterwards.

He confirmed he will remain in Wales until the Academy Awards at the end of the month.

He said: “We’re going to be in Wales and we will be in Wales then.

“We are taking a long vacation, we’ve been in a lockdown and it’s been a tough year for everyone so we took a holiday and we had our vaccinations.

“So we’re in Wales having a quiet time and are very grateful to everyone so that is where we will be.”

Sir Anthony is only the second person to win a hat-trick of best actor Baftas.

The other is Daniel Daylewis, who went on to win the award a total of four times before announcing his retirement.

Sir Anthony first won best actor in 1992 for The Silence Of The Lambs, then again in 1994 for Shadowlands, and has now won it a third time for The Father.

The 27 years between Shadowlands and The Father is the longest gap between wins by any actor in Bafta history.

The actor said: “This is wonderful. I’m at this time in my life where I never expected to get this, you know.

“I mean, I got to a point in my life and I thought I wonder if I will ever work again, an actor’s nightmare.

“I’m just so astounded. I’m sitting here painting in fact, in my room in a hotel, and I’m covered in paint and this cheer went up from next door and I thought, ‘Are they watching a football match?’ and then I got a message from Florian.”

Sir Anthony said he is still acting because it “keeps me out of trouble”, adding: “I don’t want to sound heavy about it but it’s the only thing I know how to do.

“I don’t know how I became an actor. I had no intention of doing anything, really.

“But it’s something that’s passing my blood now I think I enjoy it.

“I keep it simple. I love it. It’s a great life. And to be able to express things, I try not to take myself too seriously, I hope I don’t.”

Director Florian Zeller, who is French, praised Sir Anthony and said the veteran actor was the reason he wrote the film in English.

The drama, adapted from Zeller’s 2012 play Le Père, explores the relationship between a man with dementia in old age and his family and also won adapted screenplay.

Zeller said: “The reason why I really wanted to make that film in English was because when I was dreaming about making that film the one and only face that came to mind was Anthony’s, so it was mainly to be able to work with him that I had to make that film in English.”

Meanwhile, Sir Anthony has been posting photos on his Twitter account of his Wales visit, including a picture of the star visiting St Davids in Pembrokeshire.

There was also good news at the Baftas for Carey Mulligan, whose mum Nano is from Llandeilo. The film Promising Young Woman stars Mulligan as a traumatised woman seeking vengeance. It took home the gongs for outstanding British film and original screenplay, with Emerald Fennel both writer and director.

Penarth-raised actress Morfydd Clark was one of the talented performers in the running for a Rising Star Award at the Baftas, but she lost out to actress Bukky Bakray.
