SHARONLLOYD

- ON LIFE’S LITTLE INCIDENTS

I’M a big fan of the police drama ‘Line of Duty’ and along with millions I tuned in on Sunday night.

However, I’m not very good with scary, tense scenes so I ended up having to turn away more than once, relying on blokey to update me on the bits I was too nervous to watch.

I’m actually quite useless with anything squeamish and usually have to have a book or a cushion to hand to hide behind when things get a bit stressful.

Blokey will watch all sorts however, and I’ve often found myself wandering into the lounge or glancing at the screen just as something particularly gory happens. I have to scurry to the safety of my kitchen and my portable TV, especially as he enjoys programmes like ‘The Walking Dead’ with limbs tumbling onto the floor among blood and guts. NOT my idea of an evening’s viewing.

I won’t even consider going to the cinema to watch any film with a hint of horror as it would be a complete waste of my money. I’d have to sit there with my eyes screwed shut and my fingers in my ears for the duration and would probably have nightmares months later.

I’m still unsettled by the scene in ‘Salem’s Lot’ where two ghostly young vampires floated mid-air outside a window, tapping on it whilst whispering quite menacingly to be let in. It was about 1979, I was a teenager, yet to this day I half expect them to be outside my window as I go to draw the curtains on a dark evening.

My mind boggles just remembering that I went to see the likes of ‘Halloween’ and ‘Fatal Attraction’ on the big screen many moons ago, when I can’t even watch them on the TV now in the comfort of my home, knowing about the spooky bits ahead that will make me jump in terror.

So for the sake of my sanity and to keep nightmares at bay, I shall stick to my ‘safe’ programmes for now, avoid anything scary and have my cushion ready for next week’s ‘Line of Duty’!
