‘It’s in the cards’ for Zeta-jones’ children to be star actors too

HOLLYWOOD could yet get a new A-list dynasty – after Catherine Zeta-jones suggested it’s “in the cards” for her two children to follow in their parents’ footsteps and become actors.

The Oscar-winning actress from Swansea and her husband Michael Douglas are parents to

Dylan, aged 20, and Carys, 17, who have both expressed an interest in becoming actors.

Should they pursue such a career, it would mark the third generation of actors in the family following Michael’s screen legend father Kirk Douglas – the Spartacus star who died at the age of 103 last year.

Appearing on the Today show in the US via a video link, Zeta-jones said both her children were “passionate” about becoming actors, despite her husband initially suggesting other career paths to them.

She explained that Dylan and Carys used to go to theatre camps with “all the Broadway kids” and that they “held their own very, very well”.

Two years ago, as she returned to Swansea to be honoured with the Freedom of the City, the Hollywood actress revealed she had been secretly sending her children to Swansea for two weeks a year.

She said at the time: “It’s very grounding for the kids and they often love coming here and they come back every year to Wales”.

Speaking on Zeta-jones said: journey I’ve had

Today, “The

as an actor has been extraordinary, so I can only encourage them to do what they love.

“They’re both extremely bright and they’re both studying history and politics.”

She quipped: “And they get all their brains from me,” before adding: “But that said, Michael and I would be the first parents to say, ‘You know, maybe you should think of another career,’ but we’ve seen how passionate they are about the craft.

“They know what celebritydom is. They know the good, the bad, warts and all of that. “But their passion is about acting as a craft and they’ve done every theatre camp... My kids went off to summer camp every year, to theatre camp with all the Broadway kids, and held their own very, very well, I have to say.” Zeta-jones also expressed some concerns over the pressure that Dylan and Carys would face in a bid to prove themselves as the children of two well-established actors, but explained that the pair were “not deterred”. “In a way, one would think that there’s so many open doors for people to go into the same business as their parents, but, in fact, one has to really prove themselves more, and it’s hard to be compared to,” she added. “He’s [Michael] able to share with them what that means because I don’t know what that means. “Michael’s experience was, it’s a hard act to follow when your dad’s Spartacus. “They’ve had that discussion and they’re still not deterred. “So I just presume that it’s in the cards and I’m very excited to see whatever journey they happen to go on.”
