University’s goal to boost sporting achievement from the campus to community
SWANSEA UNIVERSITY IS DELIGHTED TO BE PART OF THIS YEAR’S SOUTH WALES EVENING POST COMMUNITY AWARDS AND IS VERY PROUD TO BE SPONSORING THE SPORTING EXCELLENCE AWARD.
THIS award celebrates the achievements of talented athletes in the community so it is particularly appropriate that the University, with its own rich sporting history, should be giving this its support.
For more than a century, Swansea University has always promoted and celebrated sport and active lifestyles. Among its many sporting alumni are Wales and British and Irish Lions captain Alun Wyn Jones, Paralympic gold medallist Liz Johnson and Siwan Lillicrap, captain of Wales women’s rugby team.
Athletes from the University have also represented Wales, Great Britain or their country in a range of other sports, including judo, American football, surfing, athletics, cricket, hockey, boccia, rowing, karate, tae kwon do, lacrosse, sailing and wind surfing.
But such high-level success is no accident - it is a result of the support available and the priority that the University gives to sport and wellbeing in general.
And this commitment has never been stronger with the University currently building on successful collaborations with prestigious sporting partners at the highest level as well as those on its doorstep - from Sport Wales, the FAW and WRU to Swansea City, the Ospreys and Scarlets, and from Hockey Wales and Swim Wales to Swansea Harriers.
The University believes sport and active lifestyles are central not only its overall success but also to shaping a flourishing society. That is why it aims to help make Swansea Bay City Region the sporting and wellbeing capital of Wales by supporting students, staff, and the wider community to thrive in their academic, social and professional lives.
With more than 60 sports teams and excellent facilities on both campuses, Swansea University offers everything students need for a healthy, sporting lifestyle - from beginners to elite athletes.
The Swansea Bay Sports Park, next to the Singleton Park Campus, includes the 50m national pool, athletics track, state-of-the-art gym facilities, tennis courts and much more, while the Bay Campus has a full-height sports hall, gym and outdoor pitches.
The University’s selected high-performance sports have a dedicated head, who works with coaches to enable students to reach and maintain top-level performance, and the University also boasts a well-established Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and other scholarships to support students who are exceptionally talented athletes.
Every year, the Welsh Varsity sees Swansea University and Cardiff University go head-to-head in more than 30 different sports, culminating with the showpiece rugby union fixtures at either Cardiff’s Principality Stadium or Swansea’s Liberty Stadium.
Champions, Olympians, and legends have all contributed to 100 years of sporting excellence at Swansea University, and the next century will see the University building on its legacy of excellence from its unique place at the heart of the community.
