Jones on song as South Gower in control

- NIGEL MAIMONE

WITH the West Wales FA Cup taking precedence last Saturday, there was just one fixture in the West Wales Premier League.

It saw South Gower travel to Parc Afon Twrch in Cwmtwrch where they met an inconsistent Cwm Wanderers side, knowing that the win would take them back to the top of the table.

With a mixed recent history which has seen them lift the West Wales Cup at the Liberty Stadium and then enjoy a stint in the Welsh League, South Gower plummeted and just six years ago were competing in division four of the Swansea Senior League.

They now seem to be well and truly back on track, emerging from the heavy rain and high winds at Cwm with a comprehensive 6-0 win, having already netted 20 league goals from their six league matches.

On a heavy but decent surface in difficult conditions, the game started at a frenetic pace. It was the Scurlage based side who opened the scoring through a Jason Heath header, while Jack Jones added a second with an outstanding finish to put the away side 2-0 up inside ten minutes.

Jones grabbed his second from a Jack Dixon cross for a 3-0 half-time lead, although Cwm had moments to suggest they were in the game.

Any thoughts of an unlikely Cwm comeback ended when Morgan Lucas got a fourth Gower goal with a nonchalant finish, before Jones completed his hat-trick from the edge of the penalty box with 20 minutes left, while Matthew Lloyd put the icing on the cake with a sixth goal after being nicely set up by substitute Owen Evans.

Cwm Wanderers: D Davies, D Gemine, B Jones, S Berrow, A Davies, C Ennis, L Powell, J Hickey, J Sadler, R Probert, O Ranford. Subs: P Doherty, R Cartledge, D Patterson, L Close, H Ranford.

Meanwhile, at the Welfare Ground in Onllwyn in the West Wales Cup, Seven Sisters Onllwyn entertained their old adversaries Ystradgynlais, finalists at the Liberty Stadium in 2015, from the Neath League.

Seven showed no mercy, inflicting an 8-0 drubbing on the young, inexperienced visiting Ystrad side. Nathan Jones was in the goals again with a hat-trick, with three more from Steffan Jenkins, whilst Jac Sudale and Dan Evans completed the rout.

This Saturday will see the top two sides in the West Wales Premier League clash at Scurlage when South Gower host an unbeaten Penlan Club, who will be hoping to return to top spot with a win.

In the only other league game, Cwm Wanderers head to the Dingle to play mid-table Morriston Town, who are unbeaten in three.
