Police investigate after estate fire that shocked local residents

-

DYFED-POWYS Police is investigating a suspicious fire on a housing estate in the village of Garnant near Ammanford.

Community leaders said locals have been shocked by the blaze, which was confined to a garage belonging to a property on the Maes y Bedol estate shortly after 11.30pm last Friday.

Police and fire crews attended after the alarm was raised.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-powys Police said: “The fire is currently being treated as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information that could help officers with their investigation is asked to report it to Dyfed-powys Police.”

Garnant county councillor Kevin Madge said he was eager to see the culprit or culprits caught and brought to justice.

Cllr Madge said he believed the blaze was an arson attack, adding: “I believe the bungalow belonging to the garage is currently empty.

“People have been shocked by this incident, which looks like it could have been a deliberate arson attack.

“Thankfully, the quick thinking of locals saw the fire brought under control but it could have easily spread to parked cars and homes.

“There are other garages near it and that fire could have hit those too had it not been put out so quickly.

“There are a lot of elderly people on the estate and I want to reassure them that whoever did this will be caught, and I thank police for their ongoing work into the matter.

“I know there were reports of two people acting suspiciously in the area that night and that has been passed on to the police.”
