Community farm’s grand donation

-

A COMMUNITY farm in Swansea which features rare breed animals has been handed a grant from a local housebuilder.

Swansea Community Farm, in Fforestfach, has received a £1,000 gift from Persimmon Homes West Wales.

The money comes as part of the housebuilder’s Community Champions scheme. Each and every month Persimmon donates up to £64,000 to good causes across the UK.

The farm is run by the community for the community, with volunteers aged eight to 82.

The team has developed the site for more than 20 years, caring for the rare breed animals and tending the organic allotments and orchards.

Louise Morgan, a fundraiser at the farm, said: “We’re very grateful to Persimmon for this generous donation.

“The majority of people volunteer at the farm have suffered from ill health in the past and they use that experience to support and mentor others.

“Keeping our site safe and hygienic is essential, not just for the children and adult volunteers and members of the public visiting, but also for our animals.

“The annual cost of cleaning materials is £7,000. Our costs are rising. This money will help towards those expenses.”

Sharon Bouhali, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Swansea Community Farm.

“I know the farm is well loved in the local area and has a really positive impact on the people who visit, so it’s a privilege to be able to help.

“We are committed to supporting the wider community in the cities, towns and villages in which we are building, and this is another example of that.”

The farm has had a number of VIP visitors down the years, including the Prince of Wales and Welsh Government ministers.
