Tide means a change for fireworks spectacular

SWANSEA’S spectacular annual fireworks show is set to return this year with plans to make it bigger and better then ever.

With a new date of November 12, alongside a familiar location, Swansea Council is putting on the largescale event in what it has described as a safe environment so everyone can enjoy the spectacle.

It is the first time in two years the fireworks show has been given the green light after Covid safety concerns saw it cancelled previously.

Swansea Council said Swansea Bay was the best location because of its wide outdoor space and room for spreading out. Covid passes will also not be required due to this type of event being exempt. Low tide is the reason for the move to November 12. It’s normally held on fireworks night itself – November 5

The event will run from 6.30pm to 8pm, with parking available at a number of locations, including the Recreation Ground, the Civic Centre and city centre car parks.

Temporary road closures will be in place for the evening, including Oystermouth Road (between Sketty Lane and Glamorgan Street) from around 5pm to 9pm.

Council cabinet member, Robert Francis-davies, said: “Our display on November 12 will be great and the low tide will mean that the thousands who normally attend will have plenty of space to feel comfortable and safe.

“We really wanted to hold the event on November 5 as usual but the tide just wasn’t with us this year.

“We considered other locations such as St Helen’s sports ground and

Singleton Park for November 5 but, for a number of reasons, they wouldn’t have been as good as the bay.

“A number of other major fireworks displays across Wales have been cancelled because of the logistics of the venues and other pandemic-related issues. However, we’re determined to put on a show, even if it means breaking with tradition in order to be able to make it as safe as possible.”
