Concrete answers on new structures

- RHODRI HARRISON Reporter rhodri.harrison@reachplc.com

NEW concrete structures have appeared on Swansea’s Wind Street this week and people have been wondering what they are.

Some have even questioned, tongue-in-cheek, if hot tubs are being added to the iconic street, or some other kind of water feature as part of the plans to attract more footfall to the area.

But Swansea Council has finally silenced all the rumours, emphasising what the new structures are and how they are part of the city’s £1bn regeneration scheme, aimed at bringing new life to the city centre.

The council wants to implement changes to the area, transforming the party capital street into an all-day destination.

This will see new public lighting, new pea lighting in trees, new street furniture and more green infrastructure, along with more seated areas to create a more family-friendly environment.

Traffic will be restricted to a limited number of hours every day, for loading only, and it will remain one-way to traffic. The street will also have a level area that is disability and pedestrian friendly.

A recent survey by our website at Walesonline found an overwhelming majority of people welcomed the pedestrianisation of the city’s nightlife centre.

The new concrete structures have been placed at the top of Wind Street, near the recently relocated Jack Murphy’s.

A Swansea Council spokesman said: “No water features are planned for Wind Street – although it’s likely that new water play features will be included in our final plans for the nearby new-look Castle Square Gardens.

“A number of structures being put in place in Wind Street now will, in due course, have greenery and public seats; they will help make Wind Street a welcoming place for all in future.”

He added: “This is an exciting time for businesses and visitors to the street which will soon be a place for all-day hospitality – indoors and outdoors.

“It’s part of the city’s £1bn regeneration which will bring new life and vitality to the city centre; it will be a place where people want to live, work, study and spend quality free time.”
