Works to make suburb safer – and greener

UPLANDS isn’t just one of the most popular suburbs of Swansea – it is also dissected by a busy road linking the city centre to Gower.

But passage through it has been slower than usual for the past week, because of major roadworks.

They are being undertaken to replace the large, ugly, plastic red and white barriers down the middle of the road as you approach the traffic lights in Uplands from Swansea.

The barriers were put in as a temporary measure almost three years ago to stop drivers from turning right from Uplands Terrace onto the busy main road to try to prevent accidents and improve traffic flow.

They were deemed necessary because motorists were ignoring signs telling them not to. Swansea Council said the move was a trial measure but the barriers are now being replaced with a permanent central reservation.

Uplands councillor Peter May said: “The roadworks will replace the ugly red and white barrier with a structure that is more pleasing to the eye and will contain plants. Whilst the work is carried out it will be hoped that there will be an opportunity to carry out improvements to the capacity of the drainage system too.

“Although the drains themselves are now functioning free from blockage, improving the situation, when there were flash floods it took about half an hour for the water to

drain away. It is also hoped some work can start on the tree pits of four trees which are lifting the pavement at the same time whilst the road is closed.

The works began over a week ago and it is hoped they will be finished in approximately a fortnight.

Gwydr Square and Uplands Terrace have also been closed temporarily to assist the flow of traffic in Uplands Crescent while the single file traffic lights are operating. Both roads will reopen fully upon completion of the works.
