‘Devastated’ couple appeal for return of family jewellery

BURGLARS have made off with gold jewellery belonging to a muchmissed sister and daughter prompting a desperate appeal by her family for their return.

Two pensioners who lost their daughter in a tragic accident in 1998 discovered they had been targeted by burglars after returning to their home in Swan Road, Baglan, after an afternoon out last Friday, November 5.

They found a number of items had been taken, including cash, Royal Doulton dolls and a host of jewellery.

Despite the horror of the intrusion into the family home and the theft of the money and jewellery, it is the loss of items belonging to their dead daughter that has left them most distraught. And they are now offering a cash reward for information leading to their return.

A family spokesman said: “My parents, who are both almost 70, returned home from an afternoon out and my father went in the bathroom where he could feel a breeze.

“They always lock the windows when they go out but discovered a hallway window had been broken into. They think whoever it was was still in the house which is terrifying - anything could have happened to them. They made off through a window and through a neighbour’s garden.

“We can replace the money and some of the other items, but it is my sister’s jewellery which has upset them the most. It is their last memory of her. They are devastated; my mother’s heart is broken”.

The family have contacted buyers of gold across the region, including Swansea and Neath, to alert them to the theft, and given descriptions of their stolen jewellery, in case anyone attempts to sell the items quickly.

And they said police had already forensically examined the property.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “We are investigating a burglary of a house on Swan Road, Baglan, which happened sometime between 1.30pm and 6.15pm on Friday, November 5.

“Access was gained to the rear of the house and among the property removed was a collection of around 30 Royal Doulton dolls, several items of gold jewellery, including several pairs of earrings, a gold chain, and a Sovereign.

“Officers investigating the incident are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them. They want to hear from anyone who may have seen someone behaving suspiciously in the area prior to the burglary or leaving the area carrying a large, heavy plastic container”.

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting reference: 2100388855. You can also report information here.
