Opening shows there’s plenty of mileage in pubs

A PUB-OWNER is bucking the trend by throwing open her doors on the old Mumbles Mile.

Louise Price is turning back the clock at the Western Lane site by giving the venue its original name of Waterloo Stores.

The pub, which was first given a licence back in 1896, will be more than just a place to have a pint as people will also be able to relax with a coffee there during the day.

In years gone by, the infamous Mumbles Mile was the stretch of seafront from the White Rose at the foot of Newton Road to the pier, and groups of drinkers would attempt to have a drink in every hostelry along the front.

A pub spokesman said: “There’s not a lot of pubs opening but we bought the pub last October and bought the lease on it. We have gone back to the name of Waterloo Stores and all the history is around the pub.

“We are opening next Monday at 10am with coffee and deli food and we have got all craft ales in from everybody.

“We have Gower Coffee and you can buy the different blends of coffee off us.

“We’ve been closed for a Heineken refurbishment and we have taken it back to its stores look.”

He added: “The pub was previously the Kins Ale and the William Hancock pub before that.”

Memorabilia illustrating its history is scattered around the pub.

“The memorabilia is all around the dates because of how the pub used to be,” the spokesman said.

Louise added: “We are a predominantly wet-led pub but the refurbishment has now enabled us to do a selective menu and also to offer hot drinks throughout the day to enable us to appeal to everyone.

“We hope to carry on the good work we started a year ago and to build on the relationship we have with locals and visitors alike, with our passion for the business enabling us to offer that little something extra to make it the perfect venue to visit.”
