Cwm punished as Pontardawe take their chances

-

THE weekend’s Ardal South West League kicked off on Friday night with Ynysygerwn thrashing mid-table visitors Dinas Powys 5-0.

James Newell was the star man with a hat-trick either side of halftime. His first was on 41 minutes, and just two minutes later Ben Stewart was sent off for the visitors.

In the 54th minute Tom Phillips extended Ynys’s lead before Newell got his second and third. A fifth goal came in the last 10 minutes from Charlie Farrell. The win keeps Ynys in fifth with six games to go.

On Saturday the game of the day was at Parc Ynysderw where leaders Pontardawe Town took on improving Cwmamman United in glorious weather. Pontardawe were forced into a number of changes as a result of suspensions and injuries but won 2-0 despite a good performance from the visitors.

Cwmamman had a lot of chances but weren’t able to convert them, while Ponty scored in each half. The first was from Josh Dorward who latched on to an overhead kick by Tim Georgievsky.

Cwmamman continued to look dangerous in the second half but a good piece of skill saw Steffan Pryce get into a striking position and he fired home on 68 minutes.

The win sees Ponty stay top and move nine points clear of thirdplaced Cardiff Draconians.

At Stafford Common Garden Village went down 2-0 to secondplaced Pontyclun who scored through captain Joel Woodlington on 11 minutes and Tomos Tweedy on 59 minutes.

West End travelled to fellow strugglers AFC Llwydcoed and went down to a third successive defeat that saw both goals scored in the eighth minute. AFC Llwydcoed took the lead through Jordan Coles and almost immediately that lead was extended through on own goal by West End’s Kallum Owen. The defeat sees West End slip to third from bottom with five games to go.

This Friday West End look for immediate revenge against Llwydcoed at Llandarcy. On Saturday Cwmamman United host bottom side AFC Porth while Pontardawe and Ynysygerwn are on their travels to Penrhiwceiber Rangers and Ynyshir respectively. Garden Village have a free weekend.
