First look at homes on transformed campus
IMAGES have been released showing what the 153 new homes being built on the site of a former university campus in Swansea will look like once the development is complete.
The former Townhill campus of Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea Institute and other educational establishments is currently being transformed into a place for people to live in the future.
The new Pobl Group development will be a mixture of 153 new homes designed to make the most of the stunning views from the site.
The Edwardian college building will be preserved and converted into one and two bedroom apartments.
The remainder of the development will see the inclusion of a new landscaped urban square, generous amenity space and a good mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes as well as a small convenience store.
It’s stated that the development will conserve and maintain a large proportion of mature parkland and open space to benefit both the new residents and existing adjacent community.
It has been announced that Llanelli-based construction firm Morganstone Limited has been appointed as the contractor to build the new homes.
The Swansea site has a rich history and was known as Swansea Metropolitan University in 2008. Before that it was called Swansea Institute from 1992 to 2008, West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education from 1976 to 1992, Swansea Municipal School of Art and Crafts in 1853, Swansea College of Education in 1872 and Swansea Technical College in 1897.
The university merged with, and became a constituent campus of, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David on August 1, 2013, and the Townhill campus later closed.
Kate Sinclair, senior project manager at housing association Pobl Group, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Morganstone on this exciting new development and supporting the local supply chain.
“This development is an example of Pobl’s commitment to building affordable homes and creating great places where people want to live, and we look forward to work starting on the site.”
Morganstone managing director, Ian Morgan, added: “Everyone at Morganstone is absolutely delighted to be involved in such a prestigious new development and to be continuing our working partnership with Pobl Group in delivering first class developments. Being born and bred in Swansea, this is a particularly exciting project for me. As a company, we’re always passionate about supporting and developing the city and this is going to be a special project and an equally special place to live.”
