Andrews at the double in basement battle

-

ON Friday night West End hosted AFC Llwydcoed in an Ardal South West bottom-of-the-table clash of major importance for both teams, and it was the visitors who earned a 2-0 win following goals in each half from Morgan Andrews.

It leaves West End in 15th place with four games to go having also had six points deducted by the league.

On Saturday Cwmamman United suffered a major setback when they went down 2-0 at home to bottom side AFC Porth. It puts Cwmamman just above the bottom three and almost certainly needing to get some wins from the final five games to ensure safety.

United dominated the match and created a number of chances that they could not convert. Porth fought hard and got the bit of luck their efforts deserved when in a rare attack just before half-time a harmless-looking low cross bobbled up and hit a defender on the hand and a penalty was given. Mckeary calmly put it away.

The home side started quickly again but were stunned when a ball over the top saw Mckeary brilliantly lob the advancing keeper. The rest of the match saw Cwmamman constantly pressing. A Jewell header hit the bar and there was also a goal-line clearance but Porth’s defence held out, with Hargreaves outstanding in goal.

League leaders Pontardawe Town were made to work hard for their three points at Penrhiwceiber Rangers. The home side created a number of chances but another late goal, this time by Callum Silcox, won it for Pontardawe, who are now eight points clear at the top with five games to go.

Ynysygerwn travelled to one of Pontardawe’s key rivals, Ynyshir Albions, but were unable to help their neighbours as goals from Liam Eason and Joe Eason earned three points for the home side, who have three games in hand on the leaders.

Cwmamman travel to Penydarren BGC on Friday night, and on Saturday Garden Village are at Penrhiwceiber Rangers while Pontardawe host Caerau Ely. Next Tuesday Pontardawe travel to Ynyshir for a critical game that kicks off at 6.30pm.
