TV PICKS OF THE WEEK
THE 1% CLUB Tonight, ITV, 8.30pm
This new game show, hosted by comedian Lee Mack, sees 100 contestants narrowed down to one.
They’ll be asked a series of questions – starting from one that 99% of Brits would get right, down to one that just 1% would. Each hopeful starts with £1,000 and a free pass, but answer incorrectly and they are out, plus their grand goes into the prize pot – meaning the winner stands to take home £100k.
Lee says: “If, like me, your lack of general knowledge frustrates you when doing quizzes, then watch the 1% Club. “That way, like me, you can instead be frustrated by your lack of logic.”
THE OLIVIER AWARDS 2022 Tomorrow, ITV, 10.15pm
The annual ceremony is back and because it was cancelled last year, shows running from February 2020 to February 2022 are eligible.
Several winners have already been announced – theatre school founder Sylvia Young and Lisa Burger, executive director and joint chief executive of the National Theatre, are among those receiving special recognition trophies.
The rest, however, are a mystery, but revivals of Anything Goes and Cabaret are among the frontrunners.
Jason Manford hosts the event, held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
TRAVEL MAN: 48 HOURS IN SPLIT
Monday, Channel 4, 8.30pm The Croatian city of Split is not one on the front page of many holiday companies’
websites but it is a wonderful destination. Whether or not any potential visitors will fancy emulating the hurried itinerary of host Joe Lycett and this week’s guest Aisling Bea will be a matter of taste, as the pair explore the city’s museum of stuffed frogs and go on a dog-walk organised by a local animal
shelter.
THE GREAT CELEBRITY BAKE OFF FOR STAND UP TO CANCER Tuesday, Channel 4, 8pm
There’s a great evening of entertainment ahead thanks to a new run of
Derry Girls and the debut of Hullraisers. But it all begins with the penultimate episode of the culinary competition. Olympian Mo Farah, Strictly judge Motsi Mabuse, actress Katherine Kelly and actor-comedian Ben Miller tackle Italian biscuits and a showstopper involving a favourite memory rendered in cake.
GAZZA Wednesday, BBC2, 9pm
This two-part documentary delves into footballer Paul Gascoigne’s rise to fame. After covering his upbringing and background, we pick up the story in 1988.
When he moves from Newcastle to
London to join Terry Venables’ Spurs for a British record transfer fee in July, it pushes him into the national spotlight. Then, at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, he becomes an icon, and Gazzamania is born. However, those close to him worry about his ability to deal with the intense media attention.
TASKMASTER
Thursday, Channel 4, 9pm One of Channel 4’s biggest scores since acquiring Bake Off was snagging this raucous slice of daftness from Dave. Taskmaster is back for a new series (its 13th!) with a fresh line-up, comprising stand-up
comedians Ardal O’hanlon, Bridget Christie, Chris Ramsey, Judi Love and Sophie Duker.
For anyone unfamiliar with the show, Taskmaster Greg Davies presides over ludicrous challenges set by “sidekick” (actually the
show’s creator and exec-producer) Alex Horne.
PILGRIMAGE: THE ROAD TO THE SCOTTISH ISLES Friday, BBC2, 9pm
Celebrities Laurence Llewelynbowen, Monty Panesar, Louisa Clein, Nick Hewer, Scarlett Moffatt, Shazia Mirza and Will Bayley continue their pilgrimage, travelling by road and sea over 1,600km while learning about St Columba, a key figure in early British Christianity.
The celebs all hold different faiths and beliefs and all have something to teach and learn from one another.
