Inaugural title in Pontardawe’s own hands now

-

A BUSY week in the Ardal South West division started last Tuesday night as Ynysygerwn hosted relegation-threatened AFC Llwydcoed and, in their last home game of the season Ynys won 1-0 after an early Shaun Williams goal.

On Wednesday night Cwmamman United started their penultimate game against Penydarren BGC knowing that a win would secure them Tier 3 football next season.

At half-time it was looking bleak as Penydarren led 2-0 but an outstanding comeback saw United win 3-2 to secure those important three points. Goals from Ryan Thomas, Calem Rees and Kyle Ashford started the celebrations which went long into the night.

United were back in action on Friday as they hosted Caerau Ely in a dead rubber for both sides. The Cardiff visitors won an entertaining game 5-2, United’s goals coming from Travis James and Calem Rees.

Meanwhile, at Penydarren BGC, West End were the visitors and their end-of-season drop in form continued as they lost 5-0. West End are now relegated to the West Wales Premier League.

On Saturday both Ynysygerwn and Garden Village played their last games of the season. Ynysygerwn travelled to Cardiff Draconians and went down 2-1, Daniel Griffin scoring in the 89th minute. Ynysygerwn finished seventh in their first season at this level, an excellent return for Nick Maggs and his team.

Garden Village travelled to Dinas Powys without manager Paul Lewis, who had been released by the club ingthe week. The game ended 2-2.

Kieran Richards gave Village the lead but the home side then scored twice, but Alex Giardelli equalised.

The other game on Saturday was at Treharris Western Athletic and saw Pontyclun score a dramatic winner through substitute Chris Darlingon. This 1-0 win now takes the title chase to the last game, with Pontardawe Town facing a trip to Penydarren BGC on Saturday and Pontyclun hosting Ynyshir Albions, who are still chasing second spot.

If Pontardawe avoid defeat they will be champions and be promoted to the JD Cymru Championship, but defeat could see Pontyclun take the title if they win and catch up the required goal difference.

Elsewhere on Saturday, West End will look to go out on a positive note as they host Caerau Ely at Llandarcy Park.
