Champs wrap up great season with another trophy

-

ROCKSPUR Fords wrapped up an historic season by lifting the Senior Cup to complement their winning of the Swansea Senior League division one title and the Open Cup.

They beat Plough Colts 3-0 in the final of the Senior Cup on Sunday. They had already secured the Open Cup by beating Sandfields 4-0 last Wednesday (see bottom of page).

Rockspur opened the scoring on 12 minutes through Ryan Trick.

Sam Keefe was the target man for Rockspur in the opening exchanges, with Plough trying to play counterattacking football due to being kept in their own half.

Rockspur, offering a greater physical presence, especially in the midfield duels, were dominant, winning free-kicks and corners, but the Plough keeper coped well.

Luke Chappell was taking up great positions and drawing Plough’s defenders out of positions.

This was a totally dominant performance by the league champions, who were comfortable in possession when building play from defence, were the stronger in midfield, as well as offering the greater threat in attack.

Rockspur centre-forward Sam Keefe was holding the ball up and combining well with right-back Trick.

Plough’s best effort in the opening half came when Taylor Smith hit a 30-yard shot that the keeper failed to hold, but Rockspur cleared it.

Plough had to clear the ball off their own goal line in the final stages of the half, while Rockspur’s James Towell hit a speculative drive from 30 yards, and Matthew Hughes netted from close range just before the half-time whistle.

Rockspur were excellent value for their 2-0 lead but Plough started the second half brightly and forced a superb save from Rockspur keeper Nick Lewis, who superbly tipped Smith’s superb shot over the bar.

Plough were creating chances but were mindful of being caught on the counter.

Chappell took up some excellent positions and was a threat when in 1 v 1s, and late on he shot over the bar when well placed.

Smith, with his pace and direct running, was a constant threat but in wider positions, and from the righthand side he created enough space to fire in a superb shot that was met with equally great technique by Rockspur keeper Lewis.

In the closing stages Chappell took the ball on his chest and made time and space to fire a low drive towards the bottom corner of the net but Plough keeper Elliot Booth forced the ball around the post for a corner.

That corner was swung in and Trick thundered a superb header into the net to wrap up the victory.
