Bonymaen too strong for first division leaders as they make it two from two

THERE was again a reduced fixture list in the Swansea Fish Swansea Bowling Associatio­n due to Carruthers Shield matches being played on the weekend.

There was one second division game played on Thursday, with top-of-the-table Dyfatty producing a powerful display to take all 11 points against St Thomas at De La Beche with a 64-27 victory, St Thomas taking just a solitary point.

The top rink for the hosts saw Jim Sedgewick, Francesco Souto, Rowley Williams and skip Russell Smith defeat the rink skipped by Donny Payne 26-6. Robin Thomas got the better of Neil Crocker 24-12, but although Brian Thomas defeated Nigel Whitehouse, they did fight hard to keep the score down to a respectabl­e 14-9 loss.

The weekend had one first division match, with Bonymaen hosting league leaders Morriston United at Primrose Park. The home team, playing their second league game of the season, had a comfortabl­e 73-43 victory, 11-1 on points.

The top rink for home team was Sean Dunne, Keiron Lloyd, Sian Clement-wake and skip Rhidian Clement, who defeated Alan Rees 30-8.

They followed this with skip Alan Slattery finishing 23-16 up against Andrew Berry, and the rink skipped by Dan Amos just got the better of the rink skipped by Lyndon Havard 20-19, although the Bonymaen third Craig Amos took the jack in the ditch to score a shot when they were five against on the 20th end.

Bonymaen moved up to third with this victory.

There were four matches in the second division, the pick of the bunch being Tyn-y-twr v Clyne Valley, who have started the season well. After a close match the hosts recorded a close 57-52 victory, 8-4 on points.

The Tyn-y-twr rink of Malcolm Metherall, Norman Rees, Byron Vaughan and Glyn Williams, who beat the rink skipped by Peter Worsley 28-10, turned the match the home team’s way.

Skips Brian Morris and Roland Page shared the spoils 16-16. Clyne Valley’s rink of Graham Reynolds, Bill Buse, Mike Evans and skip Gerry Grigg defeated David Selby 26-13 but it was not enough to secure a victory for their team.

Hafod lost 47-46 at home to ALCOA Waunarlwyd­d at Victoria Park, 9-3 on points.

With the match tied at 46-46, the rink of Roger Edwards, Joe Bendle, Brian Davies and skip Keith Hunter scored the vital one shot on the last end of the game to defeat the rink skipped by Gordon Grey and win their rink 16-15 and with it the match.

The ALCOA Waunarlwyd­d rink skipped by Mike Lewis defeated John Rosser 21-11, and the Hafod

Malcolm Leyshon, Colin Baglow, Steve Grey and skip Norman Burgess, who beat Graham Cooper 20-10.

ALCOA Waunarlwyd­d celebrated their first win in the Swansea Bowling Associatio­n after joining this season.

Tawe saw off Mumbles 64-39 at Skewen Park, 11-1 on points.

Rink scores: John Warwick 26 Nigel Richards 11, Steve Price 24 Huw Williams 11. The rink skipped by Brian Fuller did fight hard before losing 19-17 to Paul Richards.

Mynyddbach beat Landore Social 61-52, 9-3 on points, leaving the visitors still looking for their first win in their first season in the Swansea Bowling Associatio­n.

Mynyddbach’s top rink was Dai Fisher, Dave Newbury, Huw Williams and skip Peter Locke, who defeated Jeff Mcallen 32-10, The rink skipped by Nigel Cornell just got the better of Dai John 21-18.

Landore Social did have a winning rink, the rink skipped by Andy Lewis having a convincing 24-8 victory against Roy Fethney.

Jersey/bonymaen and Sketty Church Bowling Clubs are holding open days this Sunday (May 22) between 11am and 4 pm at Jersey Park/primrose Park and De la Beche bowling greens respective­ly.

The free event is open to both women and men and girls and boys and equipment and coaching will be provided. The only item needed is flat-soled footwear.

There will be compliment­ary refreshmen­ts available.
