Primark all wrapped up but business as usual

-

IT IS one of the most popular stores in Swansea city centre, taking up a prominent unit on St Mary’s Square. But Primark is looking rather unfamiliar as of late, with it being completely covered in scaffolding and wrapping.

The fashion retailer has said the store is currently undergoing remedial work to its external facade to protect it from wear and tear, which it expects to be complete in the early spring, with business operating as usual in the meantime.

It is the latest building in the city centre to have its exterior hidden as a result of construction works.

On Oxford Street, six units have now been wrapped and scaffolded by Kartay, which is working to redevelop the upper floors to create approximately 27 new high-quality apartments. Redevelopment works will not affect retail trading on the ground floor, it said.

And along Princess Way, scaffolding and netting has cladded the retail buildings which house Zara, Tiger, Coffee #1, Slater and Zinco Lounge since November, 2018.

The building’s owner, Quantum Swansea LLP, had previously said there were legal matters with the building that needed resolving, and it’s understood this has finally happened.

A spokesperson for the company previously said contractors started the necessary works on the building on January 8, 2024.

A Primark spokeswoman said: “Our Primark store on St Mary’s Square, Swansea, is currently undergoing remedial work to its external facade to protect it from general wear and tear, which we expect to be complete by early spring.

“For now, it’s business as usual for our colleagues and customers as we continue to operate our regular store opening hours.”
