Gaming on the syllabus at college

GOWER College Swansea has launched three new higher education courses for 2024, including a Foundation Degree in Esports.

For those who are passionate about gaming, the Esports course is unique as it combines theory, competitiv­e play and psychology with work based individual projects and event planning.

The other new courses are a BA (Hons) in Sport Coaching and Performanc­e and BA (Hons) in Education, Mental Health and ALN.

The BA (Hons) in Sport Coaching and Performanc­e is designed to cultivate a deep understand­ing of athletic developmen­t and strategic coaching techniques.

A launch event saw prospectiv­e students from across South

Wales visit Gower College

Swansea’s dedicated University Centre to meet and chat with faculty members and current students.

“Our launch event marks a significan­t milestone in the journey of higher education at Gower College Swansea, and our longstandi­ng commitment to providing high quality, accessible and employabil­ity focussed higher education courses for our learners,” said Principal Kelly Fountain.

“Our links with leading Welsh universiti­es represent more than just academic partnershi­p - they are also a testament to our shared vision of providing accessible and inclusive education that unlocks the full potential of every individual.”

Guests at the launch event were given the opportunit­y to attend talks from industry leading guest speakers including John Jackson, CEO of

Esports Wales.

Mr Jackson said: “This is a great step forward for Esports in Wales.

“The GCS Owls have already started to make a name for themselves around the world and this foundation degree will allow the college to build on this success and keep developing talent here in Wales.”

Lecturer Kiran Jones said: “We are in a truly exceptiona­l position to have the knowledge and resources available to launch this foundation course at such a key time while Esports is a fast-growing industry, and to be the first to deliver a course of this kind in Wales is a true testament to our efforts”.
