Disappointment over closure of town post office
BURRY Port Post Office is closing following the resignation of its postmaster.
The branch in Station Road will close after Wednesday, May 15.
However, an alternative venue may be found for the service to continue, with an interested party in the pipeline.
The community argues that if it does close without a replacement venue, it will be the loss of a vital service, with banks having already shut over recent years.
In a letter to customers the Post Office said: “We will continue to work hard to restore services in the area as soon as possible”, assuring customers that “we are currently investigating the options available which will enable use to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.”
Despite this, county councillors for the town Cllr John James and Cllr Shelley Godfrey-coles said the are concerned at the impending closure.
In a joint statement they said: “We are both bitterly disappointed at the news that Burry Port Post Office will be closing. This means that a town the size of ours, that welcomes many visitors throughout the year, will not have a bank or a post office service.
“There is a commitment from Post Office Ltd to restore the service in Burry Port and it is hoped that this will be successful.” If an alternative cannot be found, they said it would be “a sad day for Burry Port as it (the Post Office) has served our residents for many generations.”
A Post Office spokesperson added: “We want to thank the postmaster at Burry Port for their service to the community.
“The vacancy was advertised and we have an applicant in progression. We will update customers when there is further news”.
