TRAVEL TEST
WHAT: British Airways flight BA2167 in a Boeing 777 economy seat.
WHERE: Gatwick to Tampa International Airport, from £391 return. ba.com
EXPERIENCE: The spacious plane impressed from the moment we stepped on board, when we began chatting to one of the pilots who invited us into the cockpit to look around and even try on their hat.
Walking to our seats through enviable business class, we then made it to the economy section at the back of the plane. It was not a full flight, so with a spare seat next to me, I had room to spread out. Without this, as a 5ft 10in woman, I’d have been rather cramped for the longhaul journey.
A host of TV shows and films helped speed up the flight, including Elvis and No Hard Feelings starring Jennifer Lawrence. Paramount shows were also available including the latest series of South Park.
The food was surprisingly delicious, with a chicken orzo making for a pleasant dinner as we waited to arrive in Tampa.
Drinks were readily available and frequently offered to passengers. Feeling sensible, I went for plenty of water instead of alcohol to keep hydrated throughout the 10-hour journey.
The staff were delightful and more than happy to assist with any issues.
This included me spilling ice-cold water on my lap about half an hour before landing.
Crew members were quick to come to my aid with napkins to help me save face on the walk to border control before we landed. Wet trousers were not a great look to greet Florida.
QUIBBLES: Lack of leg room.
VERDICT: A standard flight made as comfortable as possible for economy. 7/10
