HUNDREDS of people attended a line dance at Town Hall Gardens which raised more than £1,000 for cancer support.

The free event, which took place on Sunday afternoon ( May 29) was organised by Macmillan cancer support.

Pam Leckie, from the Macmillan Cancer Support Southport committee, said: “The event was very well attended, and raised £1,350.37.”

Pam told the Visiter that this was the 18th year she has been involved in the bi-annual event, which has raised just short of £50,000 for Macmillan support since its inception in June 1999.

She added: “All the money raised from the bucket collection and raffle at the dances goes toward services for cancer patients in Southport.

“The money has helped pay for an information and support centre at the Living Well centre on Scarisbrick Avenue.

“The centre provides patients with grants, a free helpline and general advice about coping with cancer. The money also pays for a Macmillan bus.

“It was lovely to see so many people at the event, who continue to support Macmillan and help to ensure cancer patients receive the support they need from Macmillan.”

The line dance was choreographed by Chris Jones of Chay’s Stompers.

Another Macmillan line dance will take place later this summer, also in the Town Hall Gardens, on bank holiday Monday, August 28.

Macmillan is backed by millions of supporters, professionals, volunteers, campaigners and people affected by cancer. Together they make sure that there’s always someone there to give people the support, energy and inspiration they need to help them feel more like themselves again.
