Maddocks happy to be comfy

- BY EMMA SANDERS

THIS weekend could prove to be tougher than the last as Skelmersdale Cricket Club prepare for a clash against St Helens Town.

Skem overcame Sutton St Helens on Saturday as rivals St Helens Town lost their fixture, allowing Skelmersdale to move to the top of the table.

Captain Steve Maddocks stated it was ‘a comfortable victory’ against Sutton and was very pleased with his side’s performance.

“It was very comfortable. They won the toss and elected to bat and we put pressure on them straight away.

“The spinners came on and to be honest, we blew them away. They couldn’t handle us at all and we pushed on.

“Danny Edwards and Matty Fenney got seven wickets between them and they were just fantastic. All the bowlers did well.

“We then did great with the bat too and took the game away from them. Martyn Brierley reached 50 and put in another excellent performance.

“It was a terrific game and a comfortable win in the end.”

Skem had a cup fixture against Maghull last Thursday which wasn’t as pleasing as their performance against Sutton but Maddocks insisted there were plenty of positives to take from the defeat.

“They got a score which was way too high for us and we weren’t happy about that so we couldn’t really get back into the game.

“We had some good performances though and we can take plenty of positives from the game and put it into our match this week.”

This Saturday, Skem face league rivals and second-placed side St Helens Town, in what promises to be a big clash.

Maddocks said it was a ‘massive game’ but hopes his side can stand up to the challenge and keep Skelmersdale at the top of the table for at least another week.

“It’s a massive game this week.

“Every player is available for us though so we have a strong squad to select from.

“We’re hoping to give a good performance”.
