Bath Street sunk in an epic final

-

EAST Wavertree claimed a momentous 356-332 Cup final success over Bath Street Marine Club.

The Liverpool League’s Frank Murphy Memorial Trophy final paired the relative newcomers against the much more experienced Bath Street Marine Club.

The Crosby club, no strangers to the final of this prestigious tournament, have developed a knack of building teams capable of coping with whatever ‘handicaps’ their opponents are given. However this contest proved a step too far.

East Wavertree kicked off with an advantage of 55 points, which was increased to 61 early doors, as Lee Madin registered a tremendous victory over the vastlyexperienced Ricky Brown. BSM reduced the deficit through Darren Taylor and Ken Jackson – the pair beating Joey Williams and Tony Dixon respectively – before the contest tilted back in Wavertree’s favour with Madin overcoming Taylor to give Wavertree a 68 point lead.

A Jackson victory got BSM back in the tie, narrowing Wavertree’s lead to 49 points with three to play, before Dixon’s crucial win over Taylor secured the trophy for Wavertree.

BSM won the last two matches – the consolation victories coming for Brown and Jackson over Williams and Madin respectively.

Wales international Ryan Jenkins remains unbeaten for newlycrowned Division One champions Crosby High. Jenkins has returned unscathed from his 39 trips to the table.

Police’s Jonathan Taylor, who recently won the Liverpool men’s singles title, has clocked up 39 singles wins from 42 encounters so far this season.

Other stand-out players this season include Maghull’s Paul Hutchings (53 from 61), while Keith Williams (Waterloo) and Thomas Hadley (Labour) both chalked up identical records (57 from 66).

Dave Roberts was the most prolific player in terms of sets played, his 87 contests for Bath Street Marine Club producing 54 victories, while club colleague Clare Peers was the most successful woman in the division, winning 45 of her 66 encounters.
