Going off big time at the top

- BY DAVID GRICE

CHAOS ensued in division four of the Southport Tennis League, as the title of leaders changed hands.

After Hightown’s shock 9-7 win over Ormskrk 4, Campion 2 took control after managing to squeak past the always dangerous Waterloo, 9-7.

Other winners in this division were mid-table sides Carlton 2 and Blundellsands 2. They each comfortably saw off the current bottom two sides Maghull, and North Meols 3.

It was a battle of the unbeaten sides at the top of division two. It ended with leaders Ormskirk prevailing over Mawdesley in a tense encounter 9-7.

That result has given a small bit of hope for Aughton and Ormskirk 2 after they secured helpful wins over North Meols 2 and Birkdale respectively.

In the bottom half of the table, Southbank collected their first win of the season with a surprise 9-7 win over Sphynx 2.

That result now means two points separates five teams for the last relegation spot.

Despite the win, it was the toughest match of the season for first division leaders Sphynx as they took down Croston 12-4.

There were also wins for second and third place sides Birkdale and Campion. Birkdale saw off bottom side Blundellsands in white-wash fashion 16-0, whereas Campion managed to fight off to a stern effort by Argyle to defeat them 9-7 and remain in third place.

North Meols overtook Formby Holy Trinity be defeating them 10-6 and are now in the tope half of the table.

It was the beginning of a nightmare week for Formby, as their first team lost 16-0 to fellow promotion chasers Mawdesley 2 in third division action. As for leaders David Lloyd, they managed to brush aside Carlton 11-5.

They remain one point ahead of Ormskirk 3 who matched that result against relegation candidates Formby Holy Trinity 2.

Hillside pulled away from relegation after they took down Argyle’s second team 13-3.
