Race For Life, Food Festival, Country Fair special
IT WAS a weekend of animal magic at Southport Country Fair at the weekend, with all kinds of animals wowing visitors.
People flocked to the event at Leisure Lakes, in Mere Brow, near Southport, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 3-5.
Among animals on display were Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes from the registered charity, Saints Sled Dog Rescue.
The charity operates nat i o na ll y , but the displays at the count r y fair were arranged by Sally Copson-Moore, from Wirral, who is its North West regional co-ordinator. She got involved around three years when she went to a sled dog rally in Thetford Forest, in Norfolk, and met the charity’s founder, Heather Saville. “All the dogs we use are rescues,” she said. “They come to us in various ways. Sometimes people buy them as puppies and just don’t realise what they are taking on. These are big, strong, dogs that are bred for work.” Some of the dogs performed a “rig” demonstration where the dogs pulled a sled around the arena – but one on wheels. Other animals on show included performances by the H&M Dog Display Team, hawks, owls and other raptors from S&R Birds of Prey, ferret racing, donkey rides and a donkey show.
There were Open Fun Dog Shows, plus the Mere Brow Gun Dogs with gun dog demonstrations and scurries.
Also impressing the crowds was the amazing On The Edge motorcycle stunt show – the only team in the country to perform a jaw-dropping 360° backflip.
Look out for the Southport Town & Country Fair, which takes place on August Bank Holiday weekend, August 27-29, between 10am and 5pm, at The Leisure Lakes, The Gravel, Mere Brow. For details, visit: www. garden- festivals.
