100 years of service
IT’S barbecue season, but if you buy supermarket meat it can often mean having to think ahead to defrost it, or having to cart it back from the store.
Fear not, Brough Butchers – with branches in Birkdale, Ainsdale, Formby and other parts of Merseyside – sell a comprehensive range of quality local meat in a variety of cuts. The butchers also make their own sausages, burgers, pies, dry cured bacon and black pudding, as well as a range of oven ready products and marinated meats - and they deliver!
It has been said from recollection of some Birkdale residents that the very shop where Brough Butchers stands today has traded as a butchers for more than 100 years.
The butchers was first set up by a local businessman, Harry Leigh, and his brother back in 1904.
Harry, who it was said always smelled like sawdust, employed more than 20 staff.
Today, the shop still has a lot of the original character, including its decorative glass office where customers would go and pay for their meat.
The site was bigger then, with a walk-in freezer in the back – where there is now a car park.
Today, Brough Butchers continues to fly the flag, providing high quality meats - and there is a special plaque outside the Birkdale shop, to remember Harry Leigh.
Tony Brough said: “We believe that quality starts with good farming practice and gratuitous care, standards that must be continued throughout the process from field to fork.
“We really like our business and work hard to ensure we and the people who work with us have a sustainable future.
“That is our mission and with the support of our loyal customers - we will achieve it.”
For the more adventurous palates, the renowned butchers stocks exotic meats such as kangaroo and ostrich. They even sell swordfish fillets.
Brough’s also runs an array of offers and competitions on its social media pages.
At the moment, people can enter a free competition to be in with a chance of winning two sirloin steaks.
