Miss England crowned in classic resort

MISS Preston Elizabeth Grant was crowned as Miss England 2016 at the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre in Southport.

The 6ft student, aged 20, will now go on to compete in this year’s Miss World contest.

Elizabeth was awarded the title to huge cheers inside the Floral Hall as host Jordan Williams, who represente­d England at Mr World in 2013, announced the results live on stage.

The new Miss England, who takes the crown from her predecesso­r Natasha Hennings, will now enjoy an all expenses paid trip to the Miss World 2016 final held inn Washington DC fro from November 29 un until December 21 with the chance to win a $100,000 first prize an and the coveted Miss W World Crown.

Looking very emotional as she walked on stage to collect her aw award, she said: “I d don’t know what to sa say, I am surprised I c can even make sense r right now. I am so blessed and so gratefu ful to even be here.”

As event co host Jord dan Williams asked Elizabeth if she had a message for her family and friends in the crowd, she said: “I’ll meet you all at the bar!”

Runner-up in the contest was Miss Newcastle Vicky Turner, while local girl Chloe Brown did everyone proud as she competed as Miss Southport.

On the first night of the final girls showed off some truly eye catching creations as they took part in the Eco and Talent rounds.

Contestant­s modelled their own outfits with the theme English classic fashion through the decades, a nod to the event being held in Southport, England’s Classic Resort.

Dresses were created by the finalists themselves using recycled materials, bought from charity shops, or begged or borrowed from family members or friends.

The title on the night went to Miss Sunderland Jen Wilson, wearing a black dress adorned with crushed CDs, with a home made crown and a gold sceptre made from an old broomstick.

Second place went to Miss Leicesters­hire Megan Elliott, who designed what a dress might look like in the future, with third place going to Miss Hertfordsh­ire Francesca Handley, who wore an outfit with a Victorian theme.

Miss Southport Chloe Brown impressed with an elegant black and white Victorian style dress with images of Southport.

Performanc­es were also given by girls competing in the Talent round with four winners announced as: Miss London Whitney Martins, Miss Leicesters­hire Megan Elliott, Miss York Stephanie Hill and Miss Shropshire Rashae Peart.
