From bottom two to promotion hopefuls

CHRIS Firth was a pleased captain on Saturday as his side continued their good form with a victory over Highfield.

Southport and Birkdale are currently in fifth position in the Liverpool and District a First a Division but haven’t lost their last five games.

“It was a comfortable win really. We bowled and fielded really well and just knocked them out of the park,” said Firth.

“I got five wickets so was pleased but all round the field was very tight. The pressure we put on them took its toll.

“It was just a pretty routine win from us in the end and it was a good team performance.”

Southport and Birkdale struggled at the start of the season to gain momentum but after recent form, his side are now challenging teams in a good position.

The captain is confident Southport and Birkdale can continue to push and achieve their aim for the season.

“Considering we were in the bottom two a few weeks ago and we’re in fifth now, I’m very pleased,” said Firth.

“We’re about 30 points off the top of the table now and I said to the guys I’d be happy if we were third or fourth around August.

“If we do well this weekend that’s still on the cards and we can achieve promotion which was our aim for this season.

“We need to keep going, keep fighting and I’m sure we can achieve that.”

Southport and Birkdale have a tough clash this weekend against local rivals, Fleetwood Hesketh who currently sit in third position.

Firth knows his side will have to dig deep to get a result but is confident they’re capable of getting a victory.

“It’s going to be a really tough game. They’re local rivals and they’re playing well,” said Firth. “It’ll be tight and tense. “Whoever wins will have had to fight really hard for it and the game will be tough.

“We’re missing a youngster in bat and an opening bowler so it’s not quite a full squad but we’ll do our best and hopefully get a result.”
