Join the fun and go for gold as biggest sports day hits town

-

SOUTHPORT and West Lancs are to get a dose of Olympic fever with the nation’s biggest sports day being held after Team GB’s record-breaking success in Rio.

Great Britain became the first country ever to increase its Olympic medal total in the games after being a host nation.

Team GB won 67 medals and finished second in the overall tables.

Events will be held around the country on Saturday for amateur athletes to try new sports for themselves.

The campaign is being supported by ITV, which will turn off all seven of its channels for one hour and will instead simply broadcast the message: “We’ve gone running – why don’t you join us?”

Southport Parkrun is one event joining the “I Am Team GB” day.

It is a free, and friendly timed run open to runners, joggers and walkers of all age and abilites. It takes place at Hesketh Park at 9am.

Churchtown Cricket Club will hold a Twenty20 cricket day at the Rookery, Roe Lane. Churchtown v Old Record Players XI will be the main event at 2pm and there will also be live music, a samba band, games and refreshments.

Other events include a Taekwondo tournament at Unite Martial Arts, Tulketh Street, and a free 30-minute workout and vibration plate session between 9am and 1pm at Gymophobics, Bispham Road.

In Formby, Nasskc on Harrington Road is offering the chance to try karate and kick-boxing (2pm-4pm, ages 5+).
