REVEALED: Aldi plans for new supermarket

- BY ANDREW BROWN andrew.brownNW@trinitymirror.com @visandrewbrown

ALDI has revealed its plans for its proposed new supermarket in Birkdale, Southport.

The new store would be sited on Birkdale Trading Estate on Liverpool Road, directly opposite the existing Tesco store.

But the scheme has been met by a mixed reaction from local shoppers, residents and traders.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “Due to incoming legislation, the trading estate is no longer fit for purpose and faces closure in mid 2017.

“As such, the site, which has already experienced vandalism and break-ins, will fall further into disrepair.

“Aldi, therefore, believes its proposal provides a unique opportunity to bring the land back into productive use, creating 50 new jobs in the process and also delivering millions of pounds worth of investment into the local economy.

“Aldi is committed to working with the local community, businesses, and local representatives in its planning applications and, as such, has already held meetings with existing tenants of the trading estate and offered support, if required, in relocating.”

Aldi is now inviting people to view its plans and meet its project team and to give their views.

The event will be held at Southport Rugby Football Club on Waterloo Road, Birkdale, on Wednesday, September 14, 3pm-7pm.

So far, opinion has been split, although 67% of people voting in a poll on the Visiter.co.uk website said they wanted to see the new store open.

Helen Harper said: “It doesn’t suit Birkdale at all. I love the stores there.”

Deb Atkinson said: “Spar, Tesco and Sainsbury’s all in Birkdale area, Aldi would bring more choice and better value.”

Adam Yaffe said: “Any investment in Southport is good as far I can see.”

Rick Furness said: “Really, really could have devastating affects on the local businesses which have done so well to remain in Birkdale.”

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We believe the proposal represents a great opportunity to create jobs and we hope that the residents attend the exhibition and provide feedback to our plans.”

Residents with any questions are invited to call Aldi’s freephone information line on 0800 298 7040.
