Fury as vandals smash line of wing mirrors
VANDALS on bikes have ridden down the length of a road in Southport smashing wing mirrors off cars along the way.
The yobs caused the damage to several vehicles parked along Portland Street on Friday night (September 2). It’s not the first attack – with damage being caused on a regular basis.
Now local residents are calling for police to take urgent action – and are warning other people in Southport to beware of the mindless vandalism.
Other roads are also believed to have been targeted in recent weeks, with Stamford Road in Birkdale recently being hit.
One angry resident told the Visiter: “I live down Portland Street and every night lads are riding down towards the field but on their way kicking all our wing mirrors off the cars. Another one has just been done!
“Our was done a few months ago. Tonight was a man a few doors down. Just seems to be whoever they can reach as they ride past.
“We now try and park more on the pavement but it seems it’s a game to them.”
Anti-social behaviour is now the biggest problem facing people in Southport with 188 incidents, plus another 44 for criminal damage and arson, out of a total of 530 offences committed in June, the latest date of Home Office figures.
The resident added: “It started from the garage. They kicked quite a few off tonight. I have just spoken to two men by me who are out trying to fix theirs.
“It’s two, sometimes three boys. It’s always dark but I’m guessing they are young teenagers.
“I have spoken to three neighbours who have been done tonight. There are more but Portland Street is a long road from the garage to the field.
“It sounds like they did Stamford Road too last week.
“It seems like it’s always the same time of night down here and they are always riding towards the field like they are on their way home.
“Very frustrating – so many done each night and they are literally smashing them, not just knocking them back. Lots of damage and money.”
Another homeowner on Portland Street also had her car vandalised.
She said: “Yet again us residents are vandalised down Portland Street.
“The majority of cars including mine have had their side mirrors kicked off by inconsiderate vandals.
“Yet again this has been reported to the police and yet again, nothing done!
“Last time people were chasing them after they were throwing stones at windows. “Cars are done on a regular basis.” HAS your car been damaged by yobs in Southport?
