Patience is the key with youth

- BY DANIEL MATTHEWS

SKELMERSDALE manager Tommy Lawson pleaded for patience after a fifth league defeat of the season which leaves his side sitting third from bottom of the Evostik Premier Division.

Lawson’s side lost 3-1 to Mickelover Sports last weekend, conceding three goals in an eight minute spell either side of half time.

The result means Skelmersdale have won only one league game all season.

Ahead of this week’s visit of Warrington, Lawson bemoaned costly individual errors against Mickleover following encouraging performances in recent weeks.

But he called for patience, claiming the club’s policy of promoting young players meant mistakes were bound to creep in.

“I thought generally in the last two games we have played well and the signs are good,”’ he said.

“We know that we’re not up with the leading clubs in terms of resources,” he added.

“We will keep introducing young talent and trying to nurture them but that demands patience.

“If you’re going to bring kids up rather than experience down because of your financial clout what you have to go with is patience.

“When we bring kids in of that age we can’t expect them to be the finished article. We have got to allow them time to make mistakes and develop...But it needs time for them to develop.”

Lawson’s side host fifth-place Warrington this weekend and the Skelmersdale boss said his side are relishing facing one of the strongest teams in the division.

“Warrington are one of the sides that i fancied this year.

“They’re expected to be in the play off areas if not champions,” he said.

“It will be a good gauge as to where we’re at.

“Obviously it’ll be a difficult game for us but we’re looking forward to it.

“We said at the start of the season that this year would be a long, hard season for us and I have not changed my opinion.”
