Formby archer Georgia receives training facility boost
FORMBY archer, Georgia Maryon has been given a boost to her training by The Formby Pool Trust.
Georgia, 16, who shoots for Nethermoss Archers in Ormskirk, is one of the top female U18 archers in the UK and was recently awarded one of only 40 places on the ArcheryGB Performance Academy.
This is her second year on the Academy which takes the archers with the most potential to win senior international medals for their country.
The places are awarded on skill and shooting ability but also take into account the athlete’s dedication and commitment to the sport.
The training is intensive, shooting 750 arrows per week and hours of training every day before and after school.
Her ArcheryGB coach, international archer Roy Nash, sees her regularly and gives her a strict routine to help build her strength and conditioning to be competitive in stressful high level competition.
As a student at Range High School, Georgia was lucky that her sports teachers were very supportive, allowing her to use her sports lessons and the facilities to do her training, however she has now moved up to Sixth Form and needed somewhere to train.
In stepped Formby Pool Trust. They have offered her a full gym and pool membership for the year to use as often as she needs to fulfil her training needs. And the staff are on hand to help with any advice she needs.
Trish Grimshaw, Office Manager at Formby Pool Trust, worked out the deal with Georgia. She said: “I’ve been extremely impressed by the dedication and focus Georgia has in the sport and delighted to be able to support her in ensuring she has full access to our facility. We look forward to hearing and seeing her progress in the coming months”.
Georgia was ranked 19th among the under 18’s in the UK last year and hopes to break the top ten this year.
Her most significant win was at the ArcheryGB Youth Talent Festival. An intensive week long competition held under international World Archery rules and attracting the top archers from across the UK and beyond. Georgia fought hard and managed to secure a gold medal win in her category.
Over the winter Georgia will mainly train for next season but will compete in the Lancashire Indoor Championships and the Junior National Indoor Championship.
She is also competing with the adults at the Senior National Indoor Championships to see how she compares.
Georgia said of Formby Pool Trust: “It is really helpful to my training to now I can use the fantastic facilities as often as I need. I train at home but also need special equipment so I’ll be at the gym many times a week!
“This will enable me to keep on top of my training and hopefully make some great achievements over the winter and next year.”
