Deli’s trad Hallowe’en
HURCHTOWN Deli on Botanic Road in Southport is hosting a Hallowe’en afternoon this Saturday, October 29 from 12pm-4pm.
Customers are welcome to join in with Hallowe’en games and taste traditional foods associated with the holiday such as treacle toffee and parkin cake which is made with gingerbread, oatmeal and black treacle.
The shop, which has celebrated its first anniversary, is owned by Debra Lawson, 45, and Karen Pierce,53.
Debra, who has lived in Southport all her life, said: “I’m a bit old and I remember Hallowe’en before it became Americanised. So we’re offering real homemade food and people can pop in and play games and have a taste. Parkin cake is traditionally done around bonfire night and associated with the North, so we’re making the Lancashire parkin.”
Churchtown Deli, which open in August last year, offers a selection of deli food such as hams, meats, cheeses and homemade ready meals alongside wines and beer from local breweries.
Over the festive season customers will be able to buy personalised hampers in small, medium and large sizes meaning customers can tailor it to the taste of the person they are giving it to. The deli will also be offering mulled wine, cheese and chilly chocolate making kits perfect for presents, as well as getting involved in this year’s Churchtown Fair.
Debra, who used to work in healthcare as head of communications in Knowsley, said: “It wasn’t really fun working in that area when there’s a lot of cutbacks and things. I’m a mature lover of food, and very passionate about it.
‘‘Karen and I talked about opening the business together because we wanted to bring something more local to Southport and we wanted to offer something with excellent service and quality food.”
The shop holds regular food and wine tasting events with the next one being held on Friday, November 18.
