A MIGHTY Southport radio presenter raised £1,000 for Queenscourt Hospice after undergoing a 26-hour broadcast.

Radio presenter Andrew Hegarty, who has been at the station for three years, decided he wanted to raise money for Queenscourt Hospice in memory of his friend’s daughter Kayleigh Hayes from Southport, who died in 2013 at the age of 23 from bowel cancer.

Andrew started the 26-hour radio marathon at 8am on Friday, October 28, and finished at 10am on Saturday, October 29, without taking any breaks.

His had already met his original target of £500 on the morning of his broadcast and managed to raise £1,000 by the time he had finished.

The 33-year-old said: “Usually with this kind of thing you save up four minutes an hour and use them as a break but I thought that would be cheating because then there’d be two hours when I wouldn’t be on air.

“I went to the loo when a song was playing and when the restaurant Twelve had closed over the road the owner Paulo Nugent came and brought me a lot of food. Different guests who would come on the show would bring me stuff too.”

The breakfast show presenter also broadcasted live on his Facebook page throughout the stint.

Queenscourt Hospice provide care and support to people from Southport, Formby and West Lancashire with serious illnesses.
