Be Natural in winter
THE owner of a Southport health shop is urging residents to try natural solutions ahead of the usual wave of winter illnesses.
Carol Henshaw, owner of Nature’s Remedies, says that there are many natural options which can be more effective than precribed treatments in dealing with the likes of winter flu.
The most effective treatment, she says, is by using the echinacea plant to help your immune system into fighting infections itself.
Carol said: “Coming into winter, the thing most people should be taking in echinacea. It is much more effective than the flu jab and comes without all the side effects and illness associated with the jab.
“Echinacea helps your immune system deal with various different issues, not just the strains dealt with by the jab.”
The treatment comes in both liquid and tablet form, though Carol says the liquid is the most effective for quick treatment. Echinacea has been clinically tested for more than 20 years and has proven its effectiveness.
Carol, a former nurse, also says that it is vital to take on extra Vitamin C and D during the winter to keep in good health. The lack of sunlight means our bodies absorb less Vitamin D through winter, something which is vital for the immune system to fully function and also to prevent the onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
A further suggestion for keeping good health is taking garlic enzymes and allicin mix, both of which are available at the town centre shop.
Nature’s Remedies has been open for nearly five years, though it will move to a new site further down Market Street in February.
Carol owns the shop by herself and employs two part time staff, including her daughter Katie.
She says the success of the business is down to the shop being able to spend plenty of time dealing with cus- tomers to help pick the best options for them, rather than having to meet targets like some stores, or rush through patients like doctors may have to.
“We don’t disrespect doctors but they can’t give you the same time and choice that we can.
“They’re great at diagnosing but then can only offer drugs, with all the side effects, or surgery.”
“With so many chemists closing down, there is a real need for shops like us.”
