Skip plan cleans up

THE Bath Street ‘Community Skip’ experiment has been a great success, local councillors have been told.

Tons of unused and broken items were collected from across the town centre/Promenade area in the week that the skip was left on the street, following an initiative by Southport’s small hoteliers, supported by local councillors.

Town Centre Lib Dem Councillor Tony Dawson said: “The nay-sayers have been proved wrong.

“Thanks must be given to the Bath Street hoteliers who supervised the skip and made sure it was not misused.

“The big job now is to educate the nuisance minority of tenants and landlords about what they should do for the future to get the right rubbish put in the right place at the right time.

“I am pleased that the local Migrant Workers’ Community have come on board and will translate and distribute the information.

“But there are still people who think they can litter the streets with unsightly and, in some cases, unhealthy items.”

“I think that the commu- nity skip idea should possibly be repeated in other areas of the town centre where there are many buildings in multiple occupation, as well as being brought back to the Bath Street Area before and after the New Year.”

Tracy Holgate, Chair of the Southport Hoteliers added: “The success is proof that working together, hoteliers and councillors, that it is possible to resolve problems and improve the environment for residents and visitors alike.

“Thank you to all for making this happen now and in the future.”
