Magnificent seven for school nativity

-

THE Southport Dramatic Club’s third play of the season takes us back to primary school.

A musical festive comedy written by Tim Firth (who also wrote Calendar Girls) The Flint Street Nativity has slapstick action and witty lyrics beautifully combined with just the right amount of pathos.

Mrs Horrocks’s class of seven-year-olds is about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for their proud mums and dads and the occasional social worker.

Squabbles arise when Gabriel wants to play Mary, the Star grumbles he’s not a proper star like they have at Nasa, Herod won’t stop waving to his mum and dad and the subversive Innkeeper is determined to liven up the traditional script. And then the stick insect escapes...

The story takes us from the pre-performance preparations in the class- room to the final stage performance.

There are inevitable mishaps, misunderstandings, young egos, fear of failure and fallings out.

The children’s characters eventually evolve into mirror images of their parents when the actors all appear as their parents (the play’s audience) at the post-show gathering.

Steve Pritchard and Adrian Roberts direct this warm, witty, funny play.

It is an ideal alternative to the usual Christmas fare, with original lyrics set to the tunes of the usual Christmas carols.

Steve said: “Everyone is having so much fun getting in touch with their inner seven-year-old.”

The Flint Street Nativity will be performed at Southport Little Theatre, Hoghton Street from Friday, November 18 until Saturday, November 26.

The box office opens on November 11, call 01704 530521 to buy your tickets.
