Wings flying with title number 4

- BY TOM FARLEY

IN Division One of the Southport and Formby Quiz League, with Casablanca’s victory over Zetland and Wings defeat of E Street Band, Wings secured their fourth successive championship, a record only bettered by Zetland with five.

Casablanca’s 43-41 defeat of Zetland was a tense affair decided by the final question.

Bill Thomas 18 and Chris Sumner 11 led for the visitors and Harry Owen 13 and John Clarke 12 for the home side.

Led by Dag Griffiths 21 and Keith Mulhearn and Tom Farley, both 17, Wings proved much too strong for their visitors with a 62-22 victory, Geoff Hedley 10 leading for E Street Band. Formby Sports scored heavily in the early rounds of their match with Southport FC leaving the visitors with too much to do despite their strong finish and ending 45-31 ahead.

Gary Buxton 17, Sheila Tickle 13 and Keith Gowans 12 led for the Formby side and Geoff Wilde 15 for the football club.

A fine 19 from Ian Jackson, well supported by Steve Wilson 13 and Brian Cummins 10 gave Devonshire Club a fairly comfortable 48-37 victory over Ainsdale Sands despite 15 from the ever - reliable Jack Gardner.

In Division Two with the top four clubs all gaining two points, the issues of promotion are still in the balance. Leaders Fishermen’s Rest struggled to impose themselves on MPs, finishing 36-34 ahead led by Steve Murphy 14 and David Williams 12 with MPs’ stalwart Ann Evans 14 leading the reply.

Led by Richard Farbon 14, Quads proved too strong for Vikings with a 34-27 victory.

All of Formby Pavilion’s players were in double figures in their 47-26 defeat of ExPats with Frank Gracie and Leon Metford, both 13, Ged Gallagher 11 and Margaret Copplestone 10 all making good contributions and Phil Ward 10 leading for the visitors.

Exams received a walkover from St Jeromes.
