Should town switch day for switch-on? BID wants to know

-

SHOULD the Southport Christmas Lights SwitchOn be held on a Saturday or a Sunday?

Southport Business Improvement District, which organises the popular annual event, is keen to hear what people think.

Historically the Southport Christmas Lights Switch-On event was always held on a Saturday afternoon or evening.

In the mid 1990s it was moved to a Sunday to encourage more Southport businesses to open when the then new Sunday trading laws were introduced.

When Southport BID took over responsibility for the event three years ago, following their conversations with the business community, they changed it back to being held on a Saturday.

After three highly successful years, they are not proposing to change the format of the event, however they now believe it is the right time to review the date.

They are asking member businesses to make the decision as to whether we keep it on a Saturday, or move it to a Sunday for next year.

Southport BID CEO Hugh Evans said: “Christmas might only be a couple of weeks away but, believe it or not, we’re already planning for next year.

“Historically our Christmas lights Switch-On event was held on a Saturday. It was moved to a Sunday in the mid-90s to promote Sunday trading but then changed back to a Saturday three years ago.

“We’re now taking soundings on whether to switch the event back to Sunday or keep it on Saturday.

“Let us know what you think.”think.
