Ormskirk bring home the Cup after tense Bank battle

- BY MIKE KIRBY

IN a closely fought match at Southport College, the two teams who are currently challenging for promotion to the fourth division were pitted against each other in the Divi- sion 5 Cup Final.

Ormskirk III made the stronger start going 2-0 up with wins for Jack Kinsey and Jeff Draper who beat Alex Grieves and Harry Wilson 2-1, and Vickie Jenkinson and Rachel Fenelon who won against Hesketh Bank’s Sarah Cowle and Jess Moore in two close games of 21-19 and 23-21.

Hesketh Bank pulled an event back when Karen and Kirsty Sumner beat Louise Symes and Dee Owen 2-0 but then Ormskirk’s Mike Kirby and Peter Roberts beat Geoff Dootson and Phil Wignall 2-0 to make the score 3-1 to Ormskirk at half way.

Hesketh Bank then began to stage a come back, when Alex Grieves and Phil Wignall beat Ormskirk’s Jack Kinsey and Peter Roberts 2-1 before Sarah Cowle and Karen Sumner won 2-1 against Rachel Fenelon and Dee Owen to bring the match score level at 3-3 with two events to play.

With tensions rising and just the two mixed events left Ormskirk’s Kirby and Jenkinson took on Hesketh Bank’s Harry Wilson and Jess Moore.

After some competitive early exchanges the Ormskirk pair eventually won convincingly 21-15, 21-11 to move the team only one point from cup suc- cess. It was left to Ormskirk’s Jeff Draper and Louise Symes to bring the trophy home defeating Geoff Dootson and Kirsty Sumner 21-13, 21-18, to make the final score 5-3 to Ormskirk. Cup honours therefore went to Ormskirk III but congratulations to Hesketh Bank II for playing their part.
