IN Division One of the Southport and Formby Quiz League, the most crucial match was E Street Band’s 47-22 defeat of Southport which gives them a good chance of avoiding relegation, being now equal on points with their hosts.

Alan Wright and Dave Nickeas, both 13, and Dave Twigge 12 led for the visitors.

Wings proved too strong for Zetland on this occasion with all of their players in double figures in their 54-37 victory led by Tom Farley 18, Maurice Wright 16 and Keith Mulhearn and Dag Griffiths, both 10, with John Clarke 15 and Mark Halton 11 leading for the home side.

With Zetland’s defeat, they were overtaken in second place by Casablanca.

They finished strongly to defeat Devonshire Club 41-33 led by Dave Dutton 17 and Bill Thomas 15 with Ian Jackson 12 and Dave Leyland 11 leading for the visitors.

Formby Sports consolidat­ed their fourth position with a 35-30 victory at Ainsdale Sands led by Sheila Tickle 14 with Neil Cunningham and Jack Gardner heading the scorers for Sands.

In Division Two, Fishermen’s Rest were confirmed as champions with their narrow 31-30 defeat of nearest rivals Quads, though they had to win the last round 7-2 to scrape home.

Steve Murphy 11 lead for the home side and Richard Farbon 13 and Adrian Cannell 11 for Quads.

Exams overtook Quads into second place with their equally narrow 27-26 victory at ExPats with Brian Waggett 11 leading for Exams and Leo Tobin 10 for the home side. Formby Pavilion dropped out of contention after their 38-25 defeat at improving MPs with Ann Evans 12 and Dan Evans 11 leading for the home side and Margaret Coppleston­e 10 for the visitors.

Vikings achieved one of their occasional wins with their 36-25 defeat of St Jeromes led by Joe Devaney 12 and Bob Ellis 10 with Sue Ford 12 leading for the home side.
