HUNDREDS of film fans descended on Vue Cinema in Southport for the midnight showing of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Filmgoers were treated to a special surprise as characters from the movies, including Darth Vader himself, called in at the Marine Drive cinema to meet guests and pose for pictures.

Fans were also treated to an appearance by Kylo Ren and some of the characters from the newest film as excitement built up in anticipation of the town’s first screening.

Graham Moreton, of Tarleton Photography, was on the scene taking pictures as crowds gathered for the hotlyanticipated release.

The characters, from costume club the Galactic Knights, also visited the cinema last year ahead of the release of the hugely anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Wars superfan Nathan Dutton was one of many to appreciate the night’s special visitors.

He said: “It was good to see the Galactic Knights there, they added a great atmosphere to the night. The film itself was pretty enjoyable – was it worth waiting until 12.01am the night of my birthday, instead of going out? I’d have to say it was!”

Rogue One is set between the events of episodes III (Revenge of the Sith, 2005) and IV (A New Hope, 1977). It was officially released on Thursday, December 15 and was shown from one minute past midnight on the Wednesday night.

The film is directed by Gareth Edwards – who recently worked on the Godzilla reboot – and it is expected to be one of the biggest releases of the year.

Early reaction to the new movie has been overwhelmingly positive.
