Police office suspended over drugs allegation at town centre nightclub

A MERSEYSIDE police officer has been suspended from the force after he was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug at a Southport nightclub.

The 33-year-old officer was arrested in the early hours of Friday December 30 at popular Southport nightclub Beach Bar.

Owner of Beach Bar nightclub, Craig Winder said that he called Merseyside Police after the officer attempted to buy drugs from other customers.

“He was trying to buy drugs and as we operate a zero tolerance policy on drugs, they alerted our staff.

“Me and my security team then asked them to come outside with us, and for the second time, he started flashing a police ID badge at us.

“He was clearly intoxicate­d, and we suspected he was carrying drugs so we informed Sefton CCTV and Merseyside Police.”

A spokespers­on for Merseyside Police has confirmed that the officer has been released from custody following the arrest at the nightclub on Lord Street.

“Merseyside Police can confirm that a 33-year-old Merseyside police officer from Southport has been released from custody following his arrest in Lord Street, Southport on Friday 30th December on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug.

“The officer has been released pending further enquiries and has been suspended from his duties while the police investigat­ion continues.”
